Concentration:  Clinical Mental Health Counseling

Concentration Mission:  The Clinical Mental Health Counseling concentration in Maryland provides the entry level knowledge and skills necessary to address a wide variety of circumstances within the context of clinical mental health counseling and licensure in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

Concentration Description: 

The Professional Counseling Program leading to the Master of Arts in Counseling (MA) - Maryland is designed to provide individuals who possess a knowledge base in the Bible the opportunity to pursue an integrated program of study.

The program provides individuals with theological distinctiveness, contemporary scholarship and professional counseling skills to serve within the local church, para-church organizations, counseling centers, personnel offices, hospitals, prisons, retirement centers, and a variety of human service settings. Each concentration emphasizes that every person is worth understanding and through a competent counselor, can achieve a marked difference in his/her life.

The purpose of the MA in Professional Counseling-Maryland is to provide training that will give entry-level qualifications for mental health counseling opportunities, state licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor, and professional certification. The objectives for the program are:

  • To equip the student with theoretical orientation that is necessary for assessment of the client’s learning, motivation, and character.
  • To provide educational training to enhance the prospective counselor’s clinical skill necessary for individual therapy.
  • To create within the student the ability to conduct critical thinking skills to evaluate theory and practice from a biblical perspective.
  • To provide an emphasis on application of information and knowledge by means of supervised counseling experiences.
  • To develop the student’s knowledge of the foundational elements in counseling theory and research to prepare students for further study.

Concentration Outcomes - Students will:

  1. Evaluate theory and use formal measurements to accurately assess the client’s context, learning, development, personality, motivation, and character.
  2. Develop clinical skill necessary to conduct individual therapy for those with serious mental health conditions.
  3. Integrate specific knowledge and skill necessary to counsel effectively those with various diagnoses, vocational need, and diverse cultural backgrounds.
  4. Conduct critical thinking skills to evaluate theory and practice from a biblical perspective.
  5. Synthesize information and knowledge by means of supervised counseling experiences.
  6. Acquire sufficient knowledge of scientific research and literature to be prepared to investigate specific areas of need in mental health counseling.
  7. Apply ethical principles to prospective clinical situations that reflect an open and collaborative approach to resolve ethical dilemmas.

Program Competencies

The Professional Counseling Program leading to the Master of Arts in Counseling equips students for ministry in the church and society in the following compentencies:

  • Development of an understanding of the counseling field that will be in harmony with the mission of Capital Seminary and Graduate School and with existing undergraduate programs offered by the Department of Counseling & Social Work in order to prepare students for counseling ministries.
  • Development of criteria to evaluate the counselor’s role and theoretical orientation from a biblical perspective.
  • Development of training for counseling ministries that will give entry level qualifications for mental health and marriage and family counseling opportunities.
  • Development of a program that will provide training with a strong emphasis on the application of biblical principles and counseling theory by means of supervised counseling experiences.
  • Development of an education process to enhance the prospective counselor’s professional skill and expertise in specified areas of endeavor as well as to develop the student’s skill to utilize critical research.
  • Development of foundational elements in counseling theory and research to prepare students for doctoral studies.
